Abstract

Until now, the teaching materials used for literacy training of older adults were the same as those used in infant and primary education, despite the differences in learning processes and motivation that exist between an older adult and an infant. In this research, the characteristics of good teaching materials for use with older adults, which had been evident in the literature for a long time, were studied. A series of pilot materials were developed with these characteristics in order to find out whether these materials would really work well in the learning process of older adults in the literacy process. This research was carried out in the C.E.P.E.R. of Polígono Sur, with a group of total illiterates and another group of functional illiterates. The results obtained, both through the information gathered by means of detailed observation of the functioning of these materials in the classroom, and through the use of interviews with the users, with whom the materials had been implemented, showed us that, indeed, the didactic materials which had the characteristics gathered from the bibliography, including their usefulness in their daily lives, were well received in the learning process of both groups.
