Astrocitos, su papel en el aprendizaje y la memoria

Abstract

Los astrocitos son un tipo de célula glial históricamente ignorada en relación con los procesos cognitivos, pero cuya relevancia es cada vez más aparente. Los estados de excitabilidad, las moléculas liberadas por estos e incluso sus modificaciones estructurales son un elemento imprescindible para la plasticidad sináptica y la regulación de la actividad neuronal y, por lo tanto, para el aprendizaje y la memoria. A lo largo de este trabajo se revisarán el papel varias de las moléculas secretadas por los astrocitos, principalmente los conocidos como gliotransmisores, múltiples experimentos que los posicionan como cruciales para el aprendizaje y el rol que ejercen en varias enfermedades y síndromes, con el objetivo de crear una visión más amplia sobre estos y generar una percepción más comprensiva de hasta qué punto su papel es importante en el sistema nervioso central más allá de únicamente el soporte metabólico que clásicamente se les atribuye.
