Abstract

Aim: Ectopic eruption is a change in the normal path of eruption of a tooth. The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence of ectopic eruption of permanent teeth, with emphasis on ectopic eruption of permanent maxillary first molars and permanent upper and lower canines, in a Spanish subpopulation of 487 children from the Dental School of Seville. Methods: Panoramic radiographs of the patients were analyzed to evaluate the presence of different types of ectopic eruption. A statistical analysis of the data was performed using the chi-square test (p 0.005). The age group most affected by ectopic eruption of upper canines was 8 years old, statistically significantly. Only 8 of the 43 cases of ectopic eruption of maxillary canines showed agenesis of upper lateral incisors and ectopic eruption of at least one upper canine was observed in 27.2% of cases of mandibular canine ectopia. Conclusions: Given the high prevalence of this eruptive pathology in the pediatric population, it is crucial for dental professionals to be alert and familiar with predisposing factors in order to establish an early diagnosis and provide adequate early treatment.
