Bifosfonatos e implantes dentales

Abstract

Objetives: To compare the success rate of implants and the probability of developing osteonecrosis of the jaw in patiens undergoing treatment with bisphosphonates. Material and methods: A literatura search was conducted using the PubMed electronic platform, which included articles in English and Spanish published during the last five years and with the full-text of the article available. Results: Twelve articles were obtained after the inclusión and exclusión criterio were applied, wich were used to conduct this literatura review. Conclusions: Bisphosphonates are a type of medication used to treat bone diseases such as osteoporosis. However, they also can have negative effects on bone formation, which can affect the integration of dental implants in the bone. Prolonged use can cause a complication called osteonecrosis of the jaw. Therefore, careful evaluation of patients using bisphosphonates is recommended before dental implant placement.
