Abstract

Infertility affects a significant part of the population. There are many methods to treat these conditions, such as assisted reproductive techniques (ART); however, all ART require gametes, so couples without functional gametes can only resort to gamete donation. In recent years, the field of stem cells, which have the ability to self-regenerate and differentiate into various specialized cell types, has made remarkable advances and numerous efforts have been made to use them in reproductive medicine. Although many studies have been conducted in animal models where gametes have been generated in vitro from different stem cells, safe human gametes have not yet been generated and further research is required. Here, we summarize the current advances in the use of stem cells in reproduction, focussing on their potential use in gamete production.
