Abstract

With the aim of advancing in the understanding of the nature and content of Early Childhood teachers’ knowledge with respect to the teaching of Mathematics, in this chapter we describe and interpret the actions of two Early Childhood teachers throughout a session. Thus, putting the focus on classroom practice, considering the Mathematics Teachers’ Specialized Knowledge (MTSK) model and adopting an interpretive paradigm, we analyze one video from two teachers to understand what specialized knowledge supports their practices in regard to the teaching of Arithmetic and Geometry. The results highlight the depth of the mathematical content knowledge that these professionals in this stage need, and the important relation between some aspects of this knowledge and some elements of pedagogical content knowledge.
