Abstract

En España existieron focos islámicos dominantes a lo largo de casi ocho siglos, desde el 711 con el desembarco de Al-Tariq en Cádiz hasta el 1492 con la expulsión en Granada del rey Muley Baaudihi por los Reyes Católicos. Tras la reconquista y ocupación de las ciudades, con sus respectivas tierras por parte de los cristianos, los Reyes Católicos son conscientes de no ser lo suficientemente numerosos para llevar a cabo una repoblación, por lo que autorizan a los musulmanes vencidos a permanecer en territorio conquistado, conservando su religión, lengua y orden jurídico. A esta población musulmana que vive en territorio cristiano y que paga un tributo por conservar su cultura es la conocida como mudéjar.Pese a ello, en 1502 se ordena la expulsión o la conversión de mudéjares y judíos en el reino de Castilla, aunque hasta el siglo XVII no se les expulsó definitivamente del territorio peninsular. La convivencia entre cristianos y musulmanes da como fruto el arte mudéjar, situándose como enclave entre el arte cristiano e islámico. Por ello, el mudéjar constituye la manifestación artística más genuina de la España cristiana medieval y renacentista.
