Abstract

A life cycle analysis (LCA) of the solar thermal technology compared to the coal-fired power production technology makes it possible to compare the environmental impacts of both plants throughout their service life, those of the non-renewable coal plant being higher but without being negligible those of the solar thermal plant. The information gathered in this work on the characteristics of both technologies and the values of their impact categories gives an idea of the consequences behind the electricity that is consumed and provides arguments to the public debate regarding the configuration of the country's energy grid. The methodology used, standardized by the ISO 14040 and 14044 standards, uses midpoint categories to assess the impacts and an iterative process to achieve the objectives set. To obtain the categories of impacts from the data obtained, the SimaPro program has been used.
