Pigmentos y salud ocular

Abstract

La importancia de la salud visual es cada vez mayor, siendo el crecimiento de la esperanza de vida una de las razones más importantes en los últimos años. En los últimos tiempos, ha aumentado de forma considerable el estudio sobre el papel que tienen determinados pigmentos en la salud visual. Se ha investigado la función que ejerce el pigmento macular compuesto por los carotenoides como son la luteína, zeaxantina y meso-zeaxantina, y se ha demostrado que este pigmento actúa protegiendo a la retina frente a lesiones de onda cortas. Las xantofilas del pigmento macular captan la luz azul de elevada energía, de manera que protege a la mácula del daño oxidativo. Otras funciones que tienen los pigmentos maculares son la disminución del deslumbramiento y de la aberración cromática. La carencia de pigmento macular está directamente relacionada con enfermedades visuales como son la degeneración macular asociada a la edad y la retinosis pigmentaria. Por lo que es muy importante la evaluación del estado del pigmento macular y el estudio de dichas enfermedades de forma preventiva. Para medir la densidad óptica de pigmento macular se realiza desde un punto de vista no invasivo: psicofísico, necesita la participación del paciente de forma activa; o físico, utilizando técnicas objetivas. Los beneficios que tienen los pigmentos maculares sobre la salud ocular han sido demostrados por la ciencia, siendo la ingesta de estos pigmentos en forma de suplementos alimenticios una estrategia en auge para reducir tanto la gravedad como el número de casos de alteraciones visuales asociadas a carencia de pigmento macular.
