Estilos parentales y rendimiento académico en Educación Primaria

Abstract

This study explores which parenting styles predominate in Primary Education students and the relationship between parenting styles and the academic performance of these students is verified. An ex-post facto design is used, of a descriptive and correlational nature, based on survey methods. A questionnaire based on the PSDQ (Parenting Styles and Dimensions Questionnaire) is prepared to be completed by the study participants: 200 Primary Education students belonging to an educational center in the province of Seville and who are in 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th of Primary Education. The main results obtained are the following: the parenting style that predominates in Primary Education students is the democratic one, while the authoritarian style and the permissive style are notably less present and that there is an association between the democratic style and the permissive style and the academic performance, being the association of the democratic style lower and positive and that of the permissive style higher and negative. In conclusion, due to the association between the democratic style with higher performance and the potentialities associated with this style, it would be highly recommended to train families seeking awareness and rooting of parental practices that belong to the democratic style
