La labor divulgativa llevada a cabo por Antonio Ponz en su Viage de España en favor del gusto clasicista tuvo una influencia decisiva en el ambiente artístico español hasta el punto de que los juicios que vertió en esta obra sirvieron como pauta de actuación para eliminar los ornatos barrocos de numerosas iglesias. Así ocurrió en la antigua capilla jesuita de la Anunciación de Sevilla, propiedad de la Universidad Hispalense desde 1771. El presente artículo analiza su restauración bajo la dirección del clérigo y coleccionista Manuel López Cepero entre 1836 y 1842, cuando los retablos barrocos del tiempo de los jesuitas, duramente criticados por Ponz, fueron sustituidos por sepulcros renacentistas procedentes de los conventos extinguidos en la desamortización eclesiástica.
The disclosure of the neoclassical style that Antonio Ponz developed in his Viage de España exerted a decisive infl uence on the artistic circles in Spain. For instance, the opinions expressed in this work were used in many churches like a plan to remove the baroque adornments. This happened in the old Jesuit Church of the Annunciation in Seville, owned by the Hispalense University since 1771. We study in this paper the restoration of the building under the direction of the priest and art collector Manuel López Cepero between 1836 and 1842, when the ancient baroque altarpieces, that Ponz had strongly criticized, were replaced by renaissance tombs coming from the convents extinguished by the disentailment of ecclesiastical propierties
