Abstract

El tejido adiposo ha sido considerado un tejido inerte de almacenamiento energético, sin embargo, actualmente se ha demostrado su implicación en la regulación del metabolismo. Así, los adipocitos segregan factores y sustancias con acciones paracrinas y endocrinas, que influyen en el control de la ingesta y del metabolismo. Un exceso del aporte energético, que supere la capacidad de almacenamiento del tejido adiposo puede desencadenar la aparición de obesidad, considerada la principal causa del desarrollo de resistencia a la insulina y de diabetes mellitus tipo 2. Las personas obesas normalmente tienen problemas de salud asociados como hipertensión, hiperlipidemia y diabetes, que desencadenan el síndrome metabólico, aumentando el riesgo de sufrir una enfermedad cardiovascular. Desde hace unos años se sabe que los componentes del tejido adiposo poseen propiedades útiles para su uso terapéutico. En este trabajo se describen una serie de aplicaciones de las células madre derivadas del tejido adiposo (ASC, “adipose stem cells”) que son relativamente fáciles de conseguir y presentan una alta plasticidad para diferenciarse en distintos tipos celulares. Además, se ha descrito su importancia inmunosupresora e inmunomoduladora. El uso de las ASC en terapias regenerativas representa un nuevo camino para detener la progresión degenerativa de las enfermedades gracias a la diferenciación de estas células en diferentes tipos celulares. Dada su importancia inmunomoduladora se ha investigado su posible utilidad en pacientes con la COVID-19 con síndrome de dificultad respiratoria aguda. Aunque el uso de estas células parece ser un hecho esperanzador existen limitaciones que hacen que sea necesario seguir con la investigación para mejorar su utilidad en la terapéutica.
