Abstract

Los mosquitos (Diptera: Nematocera: Culicidae) son importantes vectores de enfermedades infecciosas que se distribuyen ampliamente por todo el mundo. Esta distribución cosmopolita, hace que el contacto entre humanos y culícidos sea fácil tanto en zonas urbanas, periurbanas o rurales. Como consecuencia, la población en riesgo de ser infectadas con el gran número de agentes patógenos susceptibles de ser transmitidos por picaduras de culícidos es muy elevada. Este gran número de agentes patógenos pueden ser de naturaleza vírica, bacteriana y/o parasitaria. Entre las enfermedades más prevalentes y graves en el ser humano a nivel mundial destacan la malaria, el dengue, la fiebre amarilla, la fiebre del Valle del Rift, así como la tularemia. El cambio climático juega un papel crucial a la hora de que la distribución de los mosquitos, y por tanto la de las enfermedades que pueden transmitir, debido a un aumento o disminución de las temperaturas unido a las precipitaciones, se amplíe a latitudes más septentrionales. Todos estos aspectos hacen necesario implementar planes de control con el fin de controlar el desarrollo de las poblaciones de mosquitos, minimizando el riesgo de transmisión de enfermedades y el peligro para la salud pública de las personas. El establecimiento de estos planes de control, responsabilidad de los municipios, deben elaborarse siguiendo un protocolo de actuación y utilizando todos los métodos de control, eligiendo el conjunto de ellos que tenga menor impacto sobre el medio ambiente con el objetivo de conseguir un modelo más sostenible de frenar la expansión de enfermedades transmitidas por culícidos.
