Abstract

Abastecer los centros de transfusiones hoy en día resulta un reto para la ciencia, por este motivo y por otras numerosas razones, cómo evitar la transmisión de infecciones, las reacciones adversas de una transfusión, facilitar el transporte, o prolongar el tiempo de almacenamiento de un producto útil que permita cumplir la función de transporte de oxígeno que tiene la sangre homóloga humana, se lleva a cabo el desarrollo de sustitutos sanguíneos artificiales que cumplan y satisfagan los requerimientos de oxígeno que necesita un organismo de la misma forma que lo hace esta. Para entender la función de estos sustitutos artificiales se lleva a cabo una extensa revisión bibliográfica que abarca la composición, función y uso de la sangre, así como los objetivos que pretenden alcanzar los investigadores en esta búsqueda de sangre artificial. Además, se pretende hacer un repaso de los sustitutos sanguíneos desarrollados hasta día de hoy. No obstante, este producto no está concluido, es un producto en desarrollo, que al igual que presenta beneficios, presenta también considerables limitaciones, tales como la falta de perfeccionamiento de la técnica, el coste de la investigación o algunos efectos secundarios graves. Estas limitaciones son las responsables de que hasta el momento no haya ningún sustituto sanguíneo comercializado, sin embargo, hay presente unos últimos estudios que parecen prometedores. Por otra parte, como curiosidad, me parece interesante conocer también el uso fraudulento que presenta algunos de estos sustitutos en el deporte, sirviendo como dopaje en competiciones, a la vez que también me parece interesante conocer la influencia de la COVID-19 a nivel de donaciones y el impacto que ha presentado esta en el desarrollo de algunas investigaciones científicas.
