Restricción calórica y longevidad

Abstract

El envejecimiento se define como un proceso de acumulación de daños moleculares, celulares y orgánicos, que conduce a la pérdida de la homeostasis del organismo y a una mayor vulnerabilidad a la enfermedad y la muerte. En un intento por comprender los mecanismos que subyacen al envejecimiento, se descubrió que la restricción calórica era la intervención no genética más eficaz que puede prolongar la vida útil en multitud de organismos incluyendo, levaduras, nematodos, moscas y roedores. La restricción calórica (RC) se define como una intervención basada en la disminución de la ingesta de nutrientes que se consigue con una reducción de entre el 20% y el 40% de la ingesta calórica total, durante un tiempo determinado y sin causar desnutrición. Actualmente los gerontólogos han aceptado la restricción calórica como un enfoque para investigar las vías evolutivamente conservadas de la longevidad y para promover un envejecimiento saludable en los humanos, es decir, alargar los años de vida alejados de la enfermedad. Los efectos beneficiosos de la restricción calórica se producen a través de una serie de complejos mecanismos moleculares, que se solapan con los marcadores distintivos del envejecimiento. Se propone a la RC y a los miméticos de la RC como una intervención antienvejecimiento prometedora y los hallazgos científicos de los últimos años se discutirán a lo largo de este trabajo.
