Abstract

En buena parte de la tradición estética occidental, la música ha sido considerada como un don artístico, sobrehumano, mágico, lindante con lo demoníaco a la par que lo divino; paralelo en suma a lo irracional. A pesar de estar compuesta de relaciones matemáticas y lógicas, la conversión inexplicable de dichas relaciones numéricas en sonidos a-lógicos (sin palabra) y, por tanto, ajenos a la razón, la han convertido en uno de los quebraderos de cabeza más insistentes de la literatura estética de occidente. A partir del mito de Orfeo, punto de partida de esta concepción, una corriente del pensamiento griego concibió la música como factor civilizador y componente esencial de la paideia (véase al respecto la República de Platón, por ejemplo); pero, por otro lado, la música también se consideró como fuerza oscura, capaz de elevar al hombre hasta la divinidad, así como de precipitarlo hacia las fuerzas del mal. El mito de Dionisos, por ejemplo, solemniza este imperio sobrenatural de la música. Esta otra vertiente plantea pues una estrecha conexión entre la música y lo irracional en sentido amplio que será recreada a lo largo de toda la historia de occidente y tendrá en el romanticismo su período más prolífico.i El Doktor Faustus de Thomas Mann retoma desde la literatura esta misma tradición musical y la hace entrar en contacto con uno de los momentos de mayor crisis del siglo XX, aquel que es testigo del descalabro de la razón en el marco de la Europa del nazismo y el fascismo.
