Abstract

Arte Presolutrense. Sur Iberia.

La Pileta cave is a fundamental site for the articulation of the Palaeolithic rock art from the western end Europe due to the number of representations, and the long period of validity of the cavity as a symbolic reference place. Among the known signs, there were six positive handprints distributed in two panels, four in black in Cabras and another two red hands in Ciprés Nevado rooms. The research project that we have been developing in La Pileta is making possible to improve and extend the catalogue of prehistoric graphic representations in most of the cavern. In Cabras, the work has allowed to identify six new handprints on four different panels. Three of them are executed in red and another three in black. The hands were placed in the upper areas of the panels and executed using a technique analogous to the "ink pad". The location in the vicinity of panels with graphical symbols assimilated to the earliest phase and the chrono-stylistic parallels attributed to this type of representation suggest a pre-Solutrean period. La Pileta is the site with most representations of hands in southern Iberia. However, the catalogue cannot be considered closed and, with certainty, that as the cataloguing work progresses, new examples will be added in other areas of the cavity.
