Abstract

The increasing environmental complexity and strategic pressures to build in competitive advantages are compelling organizations to reestructure their business processes and to introduce new technologies- particularly Information Technologies (IT)- that deeply change organizational configurations and shape internal and external relationships. IT contribute both to speed change (as they change critical success factors in any industry) and to provide the tools for the control, coordination and co-operation in the innovative organizational models. IT evolved through three steps: firstly they were designed to automate tasks previously accomplished manually, and to store and process information; next they supported individual managers' tasks; nowadays they are evolving towards the development of hardware and software systems to support cooperative work (groupware). Some authors have suggested that groupware technologies have definitely removed hierarchic tools for the coordination of organizational tasks. Our paper aims at investigating the foundations of this view. We conclude that hierarchic coordination tools and the new facilities provided by IT for cooperative work (groupware) coexist in what regards the coordination of organizational tasks. Nevertheless each procedure applies to a specific area..
