Abstract

The aim of this work is to find out about the linguistic variation of luego and después as time connectors and as continuity-ordering markers in the educated norm in Seville. For this purpose, we used samples of the city's high sociolect distributed over two periods: the last decades of the 20th century and beginning of the 21st century. The alternation of these two units was studied in the enumerative series and it was related to the chronological period and to the respondents’ age, gender and individual use. The results of the research pointed to a generalized preference for después, although the most recent subsample showed an increase in the form luego. In both periods, time connector role prevailed. When these markers were used in a series, they were preferred without explicit indication of opening or closing. Furthermore, they were mainly located at the beginning of the utterance. Finally, social factors and intrapersonal variation showed some influence on the distribution of these two variants.
