Ortodoncia en pacientes periodontales

Authors: García Meléndez, Irene;

Ortodoncia en pacientes periodontales

Abstract

Objective: to examine and analyze orthodontic treatment as a complement to conventional periodontal treatment, assessing the aesthetic and functional benefits it can bring in this type of patients, as well as its clinical viability. Material and method: using the Pubmed database, a thorough search was performed using keywords and applying inclusion and exclusion criteria that led to the selection of eleven items. Results: the articles included were four randomized controlled clinical trials, two systematic reviews, and five bibliographic review articles comparing and evaluating the effects of orthodontic movements in patients with periodontal disease, and highlights the relevance of the orthodontic-periodontic relationship in clinical practice. Conclusions: the combined treatment of orthodontics-periodontics can bring significant benefits, allowing the rehabilitation of periodontal health, function and aesthetics. There is no contraindication for orthodontic treatment in periodontal patients. Emphasize the need for well-designed controlled clinical studies to correctly define the sequence and type of treatment to be followed in these patients.
