Abstract

Koloman Moser (1868-1918) was an Austrian modernist artist who accomplished the concept of total work of art through his interior design works which were made by the Wienner Werkstätte (Vienna Workshop). The complete aesthetic renewal of these interior designs, in which surface design are at the centre, occurs in a period of strong social changes, where the profound secessionist aestheticism is a reflection of the decadence of the fin de siècle period. Koloman Moser’s “aesthetic dementia” is shown in his housing interior designs - which are guided by the same aesthetic approach -, where the artistic synthesis fostered by the total work of art enables the modernist ideal of union of art-life. Koloman Moser’s surface design is a part of the aesthetic unity of his interior designs, which are a clear example of the growth of decorative arts in the nineteenth century.
