Abstract

In the field of Film Studies, the indexical powers of photochemical images —associated as they are with the truth value of any image— have been historically assimilated with realism and, consequently, with its ideological character. However, the advent of the digital posed a radical challenge to this conceptual framing. This text traces the path from analogue to digital imagery and claims for the need to abandon media specificity debates in order to mobilize indexicality as a useful concept in order to understand the digital sensorium. Therefore, I suggest to think seriously the ways in which indexicality —the adherence of the reference, but also its loss, its opaqueness, and the different processes of concealing carried over image data— may serve as a starting point for a critical and political understanding of contemporary digital images.
