Havza Bazında Su Kalitesi İzlemesi: Balabandere Örneği

Abstract

Some water quality parameters have been monitored in the 1996-97 water year (8 months) on a suburban watershed. The Balabandere Creek watershed located at the northern part of Istanbul included some basic land use types like agricultural, recreational, forest and urban areas which could influence stream water quality in different ways either as a sink or source. The influences of these point and diffuse pollution sources have been well documented in recent years. Thus, the main objective of this study was not dealing with the individual effects but monitoring the cumulative changes in the stream water quality beginning from upstream to the point, joining to sea. Four Sampling Points (SP) located under major land use types were determined on the stream longitudinal profile. The first SP had a drainage area covered with forest while the second, third and the fourth SPs were taken under agricultural, recreational and human settlement areas, respectively. The fourth SP was the last one draining the whole watershed which is thought to be reflecting the cumulative impacts of all land use types. The results of the study was also compared with a similar research performed by the staff of USDA Southern Research Station, Coweeta Hydrologic Laboratory between 1991-1993. The spatial changes in effulent concentrations showed that a significant amount of pollutant discharge was happening from agricultural and urban areas and this caused serious water quality problems on the stream. For example turbidity of the subsequent SPs from the first to the last were 27.29, 65.57, 61.23 and 94.79 NTU.
