The struggle of the social sciences to understand individuals and groups has persisted throughout the history. For Humanity the Geographical Discovery Movements and the Industrial Revolution has intensified the experience of "encounter with the other" and also brought the experience of "alienation" at the same time for the individual. At this point, Ethnography, which is an Anthropological research method based on the recognition of the other, has come out as Netnography by changing shape with Internet.

Sosyal Bilimlerin bireyi ve grupları anlama çabası tarih boyunca sürmüştür. İnsanlık için Coğrafi Keşif Hareketleri ve Sanayi Devrimi ile birlikte yoğunlaşan “öteki ile karşılaşma deneyimi” birey için aynı zamanda “yabancılaşma” deneyimini de beraberinde getirmiştir. Bu noktada ötekini anlamak üzerine kurulmuş bir Antropolojik bir araştırma yöntemi olan Etnografi Internet ile birlikte şekil değiştirerek Netnografi olarak karşımıza çıkmıştır.
