Tiberio e il culto imperiale

Abstract

Il dossier dei documenti epigrafici, arricchitosi negli ultimi anni grazie all’acquisizione di nuovi testi ad opera dell’autore stesso, offre motivo per sottoporre ad un nuovo ed approfondito esame una questione centrale del regno di questo imperatore: quella della posizione assunta da Tiberio in tema di culto imperiale, cui si accompagna quella dell’interpretazione da dare alle notizie, apparentemente ambigue, delle fonti. Riprendendo le fila di un lungo dibattito, si dimostra che il comportamento di Tiberio, che vediamo tradursi in decisioni pubbliche, si muove nella linea della coerenza e fedeltà ai dettami di Augusto, acconsentendo quindi che iniziative e cerimonie avessero luogo, purché indirizzate al Genius dell’imperatore e non direttamente alla sua persona. Piuttosto un attento esame della documentazione in nostro possesso mostra come essa si collochi pressoché interamente nei primissimi anni di regno: il che non significa che una pratica, come quella del culto imperiale, legata all’ideologia del potere, abbia potuto cessare; ma che, con lo scemare della popolarità dell’imperatore e man mano che gli atti del suo governo coloravano di tinte fosche il suo regno, si affievolì la partecipazione popolare e cessò la pubblicizzatone in forma epigrafica di atti che finivano per aver sapore di routine.
