Storia del vegetarianismo nell'Antichità - 3

Abstract

In this article the investigation of the connection between the Golden Age myth and the hypothesis of the primitive men’s vegetarianism continues. It is interesting that the historian Diodorus Siculus, referring to the theory of the origins of the civilization formulated by Democritus, interprets the vegetarianism of the origins as a sign of cultural poverty, and therefore sees it in negative terms. Opposite is the position of the Roman poet Ovid, who in his Metamorphoseon libri exalts the vegetarian diet and the respect for nature that have characterized the golden age. Finally, the author analyzes the position adopted on vegetarianism by the great philosopher Plotinus and his disciple Porphyry
