L'articolo sviluppa glia spetti relativi all'insediamento che sostengono l'ipotesi che la città sostenibile possa essere diversa dall'idea popolare di un insediamento di case singole e hi-tech immerso nel verde. Calcoli sulla dispersione del calore, sulle conseguenze della mobilità, sull'uso del terreno e sul consumo di materiale, mostrano i limiti di quest'immagine.
