Abstract

Il volume analizza le 41 lettere (qui raccolte e per la prima volta tradotte in italiano)del ricco epistolario di papa Gregorio Magno (590-604) che riguardano la Sardegna(indirizzate alle autorità politiche e militari bizantine, alle autorità religiose, ai detentori del potere economico locale, al capo dei Barbaricini Ospitone) e opera una ricostruzione delle condizioni religiose dell'isola nel contesto dell'impero bizantino e dell'appartenenza all'ecumene cristiana. Oltre al cristianesimo,religione istituzionale strutturata in chiesa (analizzata nelle sue varie componenti, e di cui si sottolinea la fedeltà alla sede romana), e a una minoritaria componente ebraica, emerge soprattutto una diffusa presenza del "paganesimo" (fra i Barbaricini, nelle zone rurali, ma anche a livello urbano, fra i ceti subalterni). Emerge un forte impegno missionario di Gregorio e una severa politica culturale nei confronti dell'alterità religiosa rappresentata dai pagani idolatri sardi, cultori di "ligna et lapides".
