La documentazione epigrafica

Abstract

La relazione prende in esame la documentazione epigrafica riguardante Velia, edita e inedita, lapidea e su instrumentum, soffermando l’attenzione su alcune problematiche da essa proposte e sulla sua importanza per la conoscenza della storia della città. Essa, infatti, consente di mettere a fuoco diversi aspetti della vita della città. Le iscrizioni sacre forniscono importantissime indicazioni sui culti, mentre l’apporto dell’onomastica offerto dalle iscrizioni funerarie si rivela spesso decisivo per la ricostruzione del profilo sociale della città in età ellenistica e romana. Molte iscrizioni illuminano su aspetti della sua storia non altrimenti noti, quali ad esempio la “scuola” di medicina e la celebrazione, avvenuta nella prima età imperiale, di alcuni suoi esponenti. Così come ad esse si devono le poche notizie disponibili sulle istituzioni politiche. Di grande interesse, infine, si profila, soprattutto per l’inquadramento delle attività economiche e produttive, l’esame dell’instrumentum inscritto.
