Abstract

La visione comune del Medioevo, convenzionalmente a partire dal V sec. fino ai primi decenni del XV sec., è ancora oggi condizionata da alcuni stereotipi che lo dipingono come un’epoca ‘oscura’ in cui quasi non si viaggiava – salvo rare eccezioni come, per esempio, Marco Polo (1254-1334) o Cristoforo Colombo (1451-1506) – e nella quale i vari territori europei erano isolati e in guerra fra loro, con la violenza come quasi esclusivo elemento di rapporto. Certamente è una visione che non corrisponde neppure alla tradizione degli studi storiografici ma, nonostante ciò, è ancora diffusa comunemente. Le ricerche che qui presentiamo ribaltano, ancora una volta, queste credenze, interrogando le fonti stesse con un’analisi quantitativa dei dati e una loro visualizzazione geografica. Un risultato questo che non si vuole far rimanere circoscritto agli specialisti e studiosi ma si rivolge così a un pubblico di fruitori più ampio e nell’ottica specifica della Public History.
