Abstract

In un un noto passaggio de L’usages des plaisirs (Gallimard 1984) Michel Foucault scriveva: “Che cosa è, dunque, la filosofia, oggi – voglio dire l’attività filosofica – se non il lavoro critico del pensiero su se stesso? Se non consiste, invece di legittimare ciò che si sa già, nel cominciare a sapere come e fino a qual punto sarebbe possibile pensare in modo diverso?” Il compito che Foucault ci affida è quello di dar luogo a un esercizio filosofico di presa di distanza da noi stessi, in cui si apre lo spazio della critica. Questo volume descrive solo alcuni dei possibili esercizi della distanza, quelli che autori diversi tra loro come Michel Foucault, Pierre Hadot e Carlo Ginzburg ci hanno proposto con i loro lavori. Trasfigurazione, straniamento e spaesamento sono le figure che appaiono in questo libro a illustrare il compito – difficile e mai concluso – della presa di distanza da sé: insieme compongono il profilo dello spectator novus, che apprende a vedere il mondo come se gli apparisse per la prima volta.
