The paper aims to take stock of the relationship between Political Ecology and social theory. Any social theory, it is observed, presupposes a point of observation. But where is it placed? Outside or inside the society under analysis? And in what sense can a theory be said to have a critical approach? Relevant questions for a field of study such as political ecology, which qualifies first and foremost for a questioning of apolitical approaches to the ecological crisis. With this in mind, the chapter examines some theoretical strands that assume salience in debates within political ecology: governmentality, Critical Theory, ecomarxism, ecofeminism, new materialisms, degrowth, and environmental justice.
