Abstract

I processi metaforici non riguardano esclusivamente il linguaggio verbale: esiste ormai una consistente letteratura che ha indagato le regole di costruzione e interpretazione delle cosiddette “metafore visive” in una pluralità di domini, in particolare nell’arte pittorica e nella pubblicità. Questo capitolo (il terzo dei tre capitoli di cui sono autrice all’interno del volume) si pone in continuità con il precedente capitolo in cui avevo indagato la funzione conoscitiva attribuita oggi alla metafora tanto dalla riflessione filosofica quanto da studi di matrice cognitivista; esso si chiede infatti se le metafore visive abbiano le stesse proprietà delle metafore verbali e, in particolare, se esse condividano la loro capacità di far interagire diversi domini semantico-concettuali e di promuovere una nuova organizzazione categoriale. Analizzando gli strumenti teorico-metodologici messi a punto dalla retorica e dalla semiotica visiva, e confrontandoli con quelli adottati dalla semantica cognitivista, il capitolo mette in evidenza sia i peculiari processi di significazione che caratterizzano le metafore visive, sia le loro affinità con le metafore verbali per quanto concerne i processi di costruzione e interpretazione del senso.
