Abstract

Este estudio intenta explorar el contacto entre la lengua inglesa y la española en los Estados Unidos de América, generando lo que popularmente se define como spanglish. El spanglish en los Estados Unidos, como forma comunicacional, resulta para muchos estudiosos una amenaza. Pensamos que una sociedad bilingüe y bicultural representa una fuente de riqueza para cualquier país, y creemos que la escuela y los medios de comunicación pueden dotar a cada persona de recursos expresivos adecuados a los diferentes contextos, y formar una conciencia sobre el buen uso de la lengua oral y escrita. Esto, naturalmente, no supondría la desaparición del spanglish en los Estados Unidos, ya que las alternancias y transferencias lingüísticas son inevitables en cualquier situación de contacto. Los resultados del estudio muestran que el spanglish puede ser un medio comunicacional eficaz en determinados contextos y situaciones, donde llega a representar “un puente entre la cultura hispana y el estilo de vida estadounidense” (Fortuño, 2005).
