Problems and methods for accessible didactics of Earth Sciences-related Cartography

Abstract

Cartography as a subject and cartographic concept are often taught in a superficial way in Italian schools because it is considered as a sterile discipline and lacking in relevance, thus also many non-disabled pupils have an insufficient knowledge of the principles of cartography. Mapping and Geographic knowledge finds nevertheless many applications in everyday life, especially now, due to the possibility of consulting maps on the world wide web. For this reason planning Earth Sciences-related Cartography activities in a museum context is highly recommended, but it may seem to be a great challenge, especially when these activities are presumed to be accessible also to persons with disabilities.The development of simplified cartographic elaborations and 3-dimensional models, which can put in evidence the main characteristics of the territory and that can ideally be overlapped to the official cartography, constitutes a useful support in order to guarantee immediate legibility to an average non-expert audience and puts the bases for the realization of accessible tactile maps that can be accessible and understandable to cognitive and visually handicapped persons.By the way, Cartography related to Earth Sciences is about much more than simply deciphering maps: it is also about knowledge and understanding of the relations between environment and man. Hands-on didactics is very useful when dealing with Geology-related topics, in fact, touching rock and mineral samples is an irreplaceable learning aid, therefore the use of objects related to the environment represented on the maps may be very helpful.The use of this kind of non-conventional teaching tools is revealing to be a valuable way of teaching Physical Geography and Geology in “Gemma 1786” Museum, which is operating in order to make cartographical and geological activities, lessons and exhibitions accessible to a large range of audience, including cognitive and physical disabled persons.
