Este artículo examina el uso del cocoliche, un fenómeno lingüístico surgido del contacto entre el italiano –principalmente en forma de dialectos regionales– y el español en Argentina entre finales del siglo XIX y comienzos del XX. Esta variedad híbrida, nacida de la necesidad comunicativa de los inmigrantes italianos, se manifestó principalmente en el habla cotidiana y en el teatro popular argentino, donde adquirió tintes tanto cómicos como dramáticos. En esta dirección, este artículo se centra en la serie televisiva Vientos de Agua (2006), dirigida por Juan José Campanella, en cuanto ejemplo contemporáneo de representación de este fenómeno. Vientos de Agua puede considerarse un “producto cultural híbrido” (Shohat/Stam, 1994: 205), en tanto que pone en escena movimientos migratorios cruzados entre España y Argentina (y viceversa), a través de una saga familiar que inicia en 1934 y se extiende hasta 2005. Asimismo, la serie puede interpretarse como un dispositivo de memoria colectiva que recupera el legado ítalo-argentino, al poner de relieve cómo el contacto lingüístico y cultural contribuyó a forjar la configuración de una identidad híbrida y multifacética. Estos elementos son fundamentales para comprender la historia migratoria y cultural del país.

This article examines the use of cocoliche, a linguistic phenomenon that emerged from the contact between Italian –primarily in the form of regional dialects– and Spanish in Argentina between the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This hybrid variety, born out of the communicative needs of Italian immigrants, manifested itself mainly in everyday speech and in popular Argentine theatre, where it acquired both comedic and dramatic dimensions. In this context, the article focuses on the television series Vientos de Agua (2006), directed by Juan José Campanella, as a contemporary example of the representation of this phenomenon. Vientos de Agua can be considered a “hybrid cultural product” (Shohat & Stam, 1994, p. 205), insofar as it stages cross-migratory movements between Spain and Argentina (and vice versa) through a family saga that begins in 1934 and extends to 2005. Moreover, the series may be interpreted as a device of collective memory that recovers the Italo-Argentine legacy by highlighting how linguistic and cultural contact contributed to shaping a hybrid and multifaceted identity. These elements are essential to understanding the migratory and cultural history of the country.
