Abstract

The article studies the diachronic semantic scope of huelga and sciopero, together with that of their lexical families of provenance. The contrastive and semasiological analysis, from the perspective of cognitive semantics and on the basis of lexicography and diachronic corpora in the two languages, shows a polysemous content with very significant common elements, such as the importance in both languages of the conceptual metaphor EL TRABAJO ES UN ESFUERZO and of the conceptual metonymy EL TRABAJO ES UNA OBLIGACIÓN. The former, in the framework of the social context in which the semantic change takes place, leads to negative connotations in numerous derivatives, among which, due to antiquity and usage, holgazán and scioperato stand out. The second is linked to a positive connotation, involving the deverbal nouns huelga and sciopero, whose semantic configuration from the 19th century onwards means that two well-known natural language nouns with positive semantic content are ‘ready’ to be used by workers and to take on the features that will characterise their rapid terminologisation.
