Luigi Sturzo e la guerra civile spagnola

Abstract

L’apertura degli Archivi vaticani relativi al pontificato di Pio xi ha permesso alla storiografia di approfondire gli studi sulla posizione della Santa Sede e su quella di don Luigi Sturzo, fondatore del Partito popolare italiano, in merito alla Seconda Repubblica spagnola (1931-1936) e al conflitto che si concluse con la vittoria dei nazionalisti di Francisco Franco. Il sacerdote siciliano seguì attivamente, seppur a distanza, i risvolti della guerra civile che sconvolse la penisola iberica il paese iberico dal 1936 al 1939, analizzando la vicenda e affidando le proprie riflessioni a quotidiani e lettere private. I documenti presi in esame mostrano i tentativi di Sturzo di mettere fine alle violenze antireligiose, spingere la Chiesa a disimpegnarsi dal sostegno al campo franchista e a promuovere un negoziato che ripristinasse la pace religiosa, politica e sociale. Emergono le inizative del movimento pacifista cattolico europeo, le attitudini delle autorità ecclesiastiche spagnole e i timori vaticani nel durante il pontificato di papa Ratti. Oltre che sulla documentazione proveniente dall'Archivio Segreto Vaticano, il volume si basa su quella conservata presso l'Istituto Luigi Sturzo di Roma.
