Abstract

La voce “Nationalism and Language”, dell' Encyclopedia of Arabic Language and Linguistics tratta del rapporto storico e odierno tra Lingua araba, lingua del testo sacro (il Corano) di oltre un miliardo e mezzo di Musulmani e oltre trecento milioni di Arabi (di Musulmani e Cristiani) e la nascita dopo la caduta dell'impero Ottomano di un nazionalismo massimale pan-arabo, un nazionalismo regionale pan siriano, ecc e un nazionalismo minimale patriota, libanese, tunisino, egiziano, ecc. Il ruolo degli "Arabi Cristiani" tra i concetti massimali e minimali di tali nazionalismi era spesso dominante e neppure il nazionalismo pan-arabo dominato da regimi locali musulmani è riuscito a partorire una Nazione pan araba. L'autore conclude che la lingua araba scritta ma non parlata ha partorito un nazionalismo morto, perché non era in grado di coniugare l'Unità con la diversità.
