This study on the social, economic and religious manifestations of the conflict with modern developments in tribal societies of the Sudan reconstructs the variations which have taken place in the structure of Beja society. The five Beja groups which are defined and which define themselves as such, constitute an integrated social, political and economic complex with intensive exchanges taking place over a vast territory which is the scene of social action. This book analyses the forms of representation and self-representations of Beja ethnic identity in the context of modernisation process of today Sudan.
