Abstract

La cattedrale di Gaeta conserva al suo interno un ricco e variegato repertorio di brani marmorei in opus sectile di diversa natura. Oggi non si conosce l'esatta provenienza e l’originaria funzione dei numerosi brani marmorei superstiti. Nel presente contributo ci limiteremo ad offrire uno sguardo analitico su alcuni dei pezzi esposti in cattedrale – posti in relazione con altri pezzi esposti o in opera – e sui relativi materiali costitutivi, con l'obiettivo di aggiungere tasselli di conoscenza utili ad un riesame critico della questione nel suo complesso. In particolare, saranno presi in considerazione i due plutei con volatili, attualmente esposti nel presbiterio. In base alle osservazioni e alle analisi archeometriche condotte, è possibile avanzare l’ipotesi che le lastre in esame facessero parte di un unico organismo, verosimilmente un pulpito a cassa, la cui provenienza e collocazione rimangono in ogni caso sconosciute.
