La vitivinicultura: milenaria actividad que aún nos acompaña

Abstract

La diversidad geográfica y climática, étnica o religiosa, ha tenido en la vitivinicultura múltiples construcciones sociales, que van desde territorios con paisajes agrarios disímiles -algunos marcados por la promiscuidad que surge de la asociación de varios cultivos-, a otros Mundo Agrario, vol. 9, nº 18, primer semestre de 2009. ISSN 1515-5994caracterizados por la monotonía de grandes espacios ocupados exclusivamente por los viñedos y las cavas o bodegas. En su larga evolución, la vitivinicultura ha tenido momentos de auge explosivos, de fina preponderancia y de tristes decadencias, pero siempre mantiene presencia y hoy se expande. Como dice Theodor Mommsen en su monumental Historia de Roma, la producción de uvas y vinos fue la actividad agrícola más rentable del imperio en formación. (1) Prosperó en todo el Medio Oriente y el Norte de Africa hasta que la expansión del Islam, que condena el consumo de vinos, la redujo a mínimas expresiones (2) o la suprimió. Sin embargo, en la España medieval, el peso de cristianos y judíos mantuvo viva la cultura de la vid y el vino, que tuvo nuevo auge a partir de la reconquista (Enjalbert, 1975:32); y fueron los hispanos y los portugueses lanzados a la conquista de América quienes introdujeron la vid donde hoy prospera y se extiende: California en Estados Unidos, México, Perú, Chile, Bolivia, Brasil, Uruguay y la Argentina
