Tympanoctomys es un género de roedores octodóntidos, endémico de Argentina, cuyos representantes muestran adaptaciones extremas a la vida en ambientes áridos (e.g., Mares et al., 1997; Ojeda et al., 1999; Diaz et al., 2000). Con una única especie viviente reconocida, T. barrerae (Lawrence, 1941), su distribución actual se verifica en localidades aisladas –básicamente salares- insertas en el bioma del Monte y ecotono Monte Patagonia (Ojeda et al., 2007). Durante la última década este roedor ha sido objeto de intensos estudios y debate en relación a su condición de tetraploide (e.g., Gallardo et al., 1999; Svartman et al., 2005; Gallardo et al., 2006).
