Abstract

Según datos arrojados por la CEPAL, durante los últimos años la región iberoamericana ha registrado un incremento de la violencia juvenil, y los índices de criminalidad han sobrepasado los promedios globales. Sin embargo, el tratamiento mediático de los jóvenes vinculados a hechos violentos se caracteriza por proponer determinadas imágenes de estos sujetos. Así, por caso, ser joven, varón y de bajos ingresos es percibido como amenaza. El presente trabajo propone reflexionar acerca de algunas definiciones utilizadas por los medios para tratar aquellas situaciones que involucran a jóvenes en hechos violentos, en general, asociados con la delincuencia o el vandalismo: los jóvenes peligrosos, los jóvenes en peligro y los jóvenes de los excesos. Entendiendo la relación entre los medios y el resto de la sociedad como dinámica e interactiva, estas definiciones no pueden ser únicamente atribuidas a los primeros, puesto que forman parte de una compleja trama que los incluye y los excede.
