Abstract

Se trata de una aproximación al más extenso poema del argentino Juan L. Ortiz (1896-1978), El Gualeguay, publicado por primera vez en 1970. Nuestro estudio intenta relevar las referencias toponímicas de la zona en que se despliega la temática del poema ?una historia del río desde su origen geológico hasta las postrimerías del siglo XIX? donde resultan evidentes las etimologías de lenguas indígenas, cuyos sentidos resultan productivos para la constitución de imágenes poéticas, para las variaciones de la sonoridad, y en general para la configuración enigmática de la obra. Por otro lado, más allá de estos "signos" de un origen de los nombres de lugares que se van volviendo opacos sin dejar de significar algo, también a nivel temático Ortiz esboza una fábula de las relaciones del río con los primeros hombres que habitaron y hablaron a sus orillas, así como un alegato contra las violencias exterminadoras que irrumpieron en ese ámbito.
