Abstract

We analyze the changes brought about by the Spanish Conquest in the Puna of Jujuy considering three aspects: mining and metallurgical activities, ceramic materials, building methods and modes of living. We approach the evidence generated in our project in the last ten years and combine it with archaeological and historical information available. We describe the different scale sites that emerge in this period and are related to mining activities as well as the rural areas, some of which have been occupied since pre-Hispanic times. The analyzed evidence allows us to postulate that the conquest did not affect the Puna inhabitants in a uniform way and that its study requires the combination of different types of records.
