Abstract

Para establecer acciones de conservación de las especies en peligro de extinción es fundamental contar con información confable y actualizada acerca de su distribución, requerimientos de hábitat y parámetros reproductivos. El Cardenal Amarillo (Gubernatrix cristata, Thraupidae), endémico del sur de América del Sur, está considerado ‘En Peligro’ a nivel nacional (López-Lanús et al. 2010) e internacional (IUCN 2013). Se distribuía ampliamente en la ecorregión del Espinal en Argentina, centro de la República Oriental del Uruguay y sudeste de Brasil (Fig. 1A; Ridgely & Tudor 1994). La extracción continua de individuos silvestres para el comercio de aves de jaula, sumada a la destrucción y reemplazo de su hábitat para la obtención de madera y el establecimiento de tierras para cultivo y pasturas, causaron una marcada disminución y fragmentación de su área de distribución y una fuerte reducción de su tamaño poblacional. En la actualidad existirían entre 1500 y 3000 individuos (Pessino & Tittarelli 2006, BirdLife International 2014).
