Abstract

The Mediterranean fruit fly, Ceratitis capitata, is a worldwide pest, and their populations have been extensively studied from a demographic standpoint. In our laboratory, C. capitata has been used for many years as a model to study the development of insects. Building on this background, we decided for this Thesis to use the Mediterranean fruit fly as a model to study functional senescence, broadening the understanding of processes related to aging of individuals and populations. The main objective was to look for parameters that could reflect the functional status of individuals, regardless of their chronological age. We found that lipid patterns of flies can be used to build indexes that serve as indicators of the functional status of individuals, and are able to separate populations kept under different environmental conditions. In turn, we studied subpopulations of flies separated according to their level of response to a chilling stress, in order to understand differences in their functional state. It could be shown that subpopulations with different demographic parameters have key differences in their lipid patterns, in their behavior, and in the expression of genes related to stress response.
