Abstract

This thesis analyzes the presence of violence in neighborhoods marked by poverty and environmental deterioration in José León Suárez, district of General San Martín. The research, based on ethnography, is a continuation of the work I carried out in my undergraduate thesis in 2009. In this case the focus is on the analysis of different aspects and dimensions of violence in these urban spaces, known as villas. Thus, the research I conducted proposes the notion of “violence towards life”, as a notion that conveys density to the topic studied, this notion departs from locating violence on spaces and subjects and reintroduced it in the core of a system of social relations in our society. The data shows that violence acquires specificities in the everyday life of those places characterized by poverty and environmental deterioration. Furthermore, these specificities are related to the logic of power relations which are located in these spaces. This conceptual approach constitutes an improved understanding of violence to the one limited to describing violence of and among the inhabitants of the villas. The focus on the forms of violence in the villas and the political contexts which sustains it, is key, not only in understanding the question of violence, but also to thinking about possible solutions.
