The essay attempts to examine the various alienating processes to which the main character of Hans Fallada’s Kleiner Mann – was nun? is confronted in the light of the development of the middle classes in the Weimar Republic. Adorno’s analysis of the novel is criticized; thus, the text assesses Fallada’s esthetical contribution to a Marxist theory of capitalist alienations.
